The Human Rights and Trade Partnership Project is committed to advancing dialogue, research and new thinking on the public policy implications of the murky interrelationshiop between trade and human rights. We've worked to engage the diverse human rights and trade community through a varied and intensive outreach strategy. We aim to raise awareness and generate an informed debate on this important relationship through interaction with media (op-eds and commentary), academia (speeches and scholarly articles), policymakers (testimony, consultations, and seminars), as well as the private and non-profit sectors (promoting multi-stakeholder collaboration). This page highlights our past and on-going outreach efforts. Speeches and Presentations Aaronson and Zimmerman frequently speak with media as well as at conferences and events to build awareness of often misunderstood and over-looked relationship between trade and human rights. Here are some highlights of various speaking engagements aimed at spurring dialogue: - September 27, 2006: Susan Aaronson lectured on human rights and trade at the Free University of Amsterdam.
- September 26, 2006: Susan Aaronson spoke on CSR and trade to the Dutch OECD Conference on Consumer Information and Trade
- September 22, 2006: Susan Aaronson presented a paper on labor rights and trade at the ISA Conference on multinationals and labor standards, September 22, 2006.
- May 10 2006:
Dr. Aaronson testified before the Congressional Human Rights Caucus regarding global corporate social responsibility issues. See her testimony here [PDF 148K]. March 27, 2006: Susan Aaronson was the keynote speaker at the Inter-American Development Bank’s conference on CSR in the Americas. View the presentation [PPT 801K]. November 30, 2005: Susan spoke at a conference sponsored by the European Parliament entitled “Approaching the Challenges of Emerging Markets through Sustainable and Competitive European Business.” November 3, 2005: Susan Aaronson spoke about corporate social responsibility and trade policy at the Business for Social Responsibility Annual Conference. September 28, 2005: The Congressional Human Rights Caucus held a Member’s briefing co-chaired by Representative David E. Price and Representative Tim Ryan on the findings of the 2005 GAO Report (GAO-05-744). The report is part of the 2003 recommendations from the Kenan Institute Study Group on global Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). For Dr. Susan Aaronson’s testimony click here. August 2005: Susan Aaronson spoke to the CIA about trade policy and human rights. May 17th, 2005: Susan Aaronson and Jamie Zimmerman presented testimony to the House Ways and Means Committee on the WTO’s mixed record on development after its first 10 years. April 21st 2005: Susan spoke at the WTO 2005 Public Symposium: "WTO After 10 Year: Global Problems and Multilateral Solutions." She presented how transparency and communication about trade is a two-way street on the panel "Transparency and Participation in the National Trade Policy Process." April 1st 2005: Susan spoke at Tulane University's Leverhulme Centre – Murphy Institute Joint Conference on Globalization and Fairness. May 26th 2005: YaleGlobal published a new article by Aaronson and Zimmerman, How to Jump–Start the WTO , which called on developed nations to narrow current Doha Round talks to the issues specific to the needs of developing nations. -
